Erik Spoelstra is preparing to coach Giannis Antetokounmpo after spending years trying to slow him down. The Miami Heat head coach spoke about the Greek superstar’s extraordinary qualities in an interview with Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald, highlighting above all his ability to break down opposing defenses.
“We’ll try to find some other ways to maximize his gifts, but he’s pretty much done it all.
I think more than anything, it’s been his ability to force not a second defender, a third defender. And that creates a bunch of havoc to someone’s defense. We lived it. One extra defender is not enough. And then you get a third one, and his willingness and his improvement with his passing over the years gets you in scramble mode. That part of his IQ and his vision and his playmaking, we’ll be looking forward to exploring that as well.”
Spoelstra emphasized how Antetokounmpo’s growth as a passer and playmaker has made the two-time NBA MVP even more difficult to contain. He is not only a dominant scorer, but also a player capable of manipulating defenses and creating advantages for his teammates.
