Erik Spoelstra made a notable comparison when describing Giannis Antetokounmpo after his preseason debut with the Miami Heat. Following the 129-105 win over the Toronto Raptors, the coach compared the Greek star to Magic Johnson, the legendary player coached by Pat Riley with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s.
“The size, the vision and the ability to put the ball directly in the hands of shooters are really impressive. The way he has played with the ball in his hands and delivered it, he reminds me of a great point guard who played for Pat (Riley) in the ’80s,” Spoelstra said.
Antetokounmpo finished his first game in a Heat jersey with 9 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists in just 14 minutes on the floor, immediately showcasing his playmaking ability alongside his usual ability to attack the rim. A debut that gave Spoelstra some early indications of how the two-time MVP can fit into Miami’s offensive system.
