A new era for Czech basketball is officially underway as SK Slavia Praha and ERA Basketball Nymburk have announced the merger of their sporting, organizational and marketing operations.
The newly formed project aims to build a sustainable organization capable of competing with Europe’s elite clubs while re-establishing Prague as a major destination for international basketball.
The merger brings together two complementary organizations. Nymburk contributes more than two decades of domestic dominance, extensive European experience and a winning culture, while Slavia Praha adds one of the country’s most recognized sports brands, a prime location in the Czech capital, a growing fan base and strong commercial expertise.
“Basketball has a deep-rooted tradition at Slavia. Over the past three seasons, we have systematically built the foundation for the next major step,” said Slavia Basketball co-owner Marek Tesař. “To compete consistently at the European level, we needed a partner with a proven basketball pedigree, and we found that in Nymburk.”
ERA Basketball Nymburk owner Jiří Podpěra emphasized the strategic importance of establishing a permanent presence in Prague.
“Nymburk is where the history of modern Czech basketball was written and where our identity was formed. However, if we want to remain competitive in Europe, attract international talent and engage major global partners, Prague is a necessary step for the club’s future development. Nymburk’s winning DNA will remain an integral part of this project.”
The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for European basketball, with major structural changes potentially on the horizon, including discussions surrounding a possible NBA Europe project.
Co-owner Tomáš Petera stated: “European basketball is entering a new era, and we want a Czech club to play an active role in shaping its future. Our objective is to build an organization fully prepared for the opportunities and challenges ahead.”
Ladislav Sokolovský will serve as General Manager of the new organization. He currently holds the roles of General Manager and Sporting Director at ERA Basketball Nymburk and is widely regarded as one of the key figures in Czech basketball.
The new club will enter the upcoming season with the ambition of combining elite sporting performance, player development and a modern commercial platform capable of supporting sustainable growth at the highest European level.
