The new player of Śląsk Wrocław is Nigerian center John Egbunu. The 1994-born big man, who stands 211 cm tall, has signed a contract for the 2026-27 season.
Born on October 31, 1994, in Bauchi, Nigeria, Egbunu began his basketball journey in the United States. After high school, he played for the University of South Florida, averaging 11.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks during the 2015-16 season. The following year, his season was cut short by injury, but he had previously been averaging 7.8 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks.
His NCAA performances led him to enter the 2017 NBA Draft, although he eventually withdrew his name before the deadline. He then began his professional career in the NBA G League with the Windy City Bulls.
Egbunu subsequently moved to Europe, playing in Israel for Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem before competing in strong leagues such as Turkey, Italy, France and Spain. During the 2022-23 season, with Gaziantep Basketbol, he reached the FIBA Europe Cup quarterfinals. In 2023-24, he played for LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, also making 19 EuroLeague appearances.
Throughout his career, Egbunu has also played in Asia, including China, the Philippines and South Korea. In 2025, he reached the quarterfinals of the Basketball Champions League Asia.
Egbunu is a physical center who makes his biggest impact around the basket, particularly through rebounding, shot-blocking and efficient two-point shooting. Now, he is ready for a new chapter in his career: “Welcome to Wrocław, John!”
