Simone Fontecchio, who is currently in Trento with Italbasket awaiting their away game in Tuzla, spoke with Beppe Nigro of *La Gazzetta dello Sport*.
On His NBA Decision
“My intention was to stay in the NBA, preferably in Miami. The team’s decisions were clear as they made a major move to sign a Hall of Famer like Antetokounmpo. It’s an opportunity for the organization, the city, and the team to achieve something even greater. For me, it’s a chance to play for a team that truly has championship aspirations. For my part, I’m really excited and curious to get to know him and see what it’s like to play with him. The fact that they wanted me so badly even before free agency reassured me and made me want to stay.”
On the Europe option
“We didn’t even consider the idea of returning to Europe this summer. So I don’t even know—we didn’t go looking for any offers. When this opportunity in Miami came along, I just accepted it. What are my plans? In all honesty, I’m simply trying to enjoy what’s right in front of me: these two games with the national team, then a super exciting year professionally. I’m happy that my family can stay in the same place for two years in a row—the place where I want to be and where I feel wanted and appreciated. I’m not thinking about next year at all.”
