Simone Fontecchio will continue his NBA career. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Italian forward has agreed to sign a one-year deal to remain with the Miami Heat, with the franchise working quickly with his agent Sam Goldfeder to finalize the agreement.
According to Sky Sport, the deal will be worth around $2.6 million for one season, a figure in line with the NBA minimum salary for a player with his experience. Ira Winderman added that the cap hit for the Heat will be around $2.5 million.
Last season, Fontecchio averaged 8.5 points while shooting 37.5 percent from three-point range, confirming his value as a perimeter weapon for Miami. He appeared in 70 games, including 9 starts, and played nearly 17 minutes per game.
Staying with the Heat was also Fontecchio’s preference. Speaking to Sky Sport, he had said that he and his family had settled well in Miami and that he wanted to give continuity to last season.
The signing closes the door, at least for this summer, on a return to Europe. Olimpia Milano was among the clubs that had shown interest, but any possible return of the Italian forward will have to wait.
Fontecchio will now begin his fifth NBA season, aiming to strengthen his role in the Heat rotation and build toward his next contract.
