NBA Finals MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was celebrated in his hometown of Hamilton on Thursday, receiving the key to the city from Mayor Andrea Horwath during a public rally at Hamilton Stadium. Horwath also revealed that a street will soon bear his name, a tribute to the Oklahoma City Thunder star after he led the franchise to an NBA championship.

Speaking to an energetic crowd in the north end zone while holding the Larry O’Brien Trophy aloft, Gilgeous-Alexander reflected on his roots:
“Whenever I traveled around the world, people would ask where I was from, and I always proudly said Hamilton. This city has a unique grit, determination, pride, and energy that sets it apart from anywhere else in Ontario — and I carry that spirit everywhere I go. That’s why it was such an overwhelming joy to learn I’d be receiving the key to the city I love and having a street named after me.”
Later that evening, the 26-year-old was honored again at Hamilton Stadium during the CFL matchup between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the B.C. Lions, receiving an ovation before the start of the second quarter.
