Sergio Llull: “I want to help Real Madrid and be an example for the young players”

Real Madrid captain and guard Sergio Llull has outlined his goals ahead of the new season. Set to turn 39, Llull recently extended his contract through the end of the 2026-27 season and is preparing for his 20th campaign with the Spanish powerhouse.

Sergio Llull: “I want to help the team and be an example”

“The feelings are very good. Everyone has arrived in good shape and these have been tough weeks of preseason. That’s what is needed at this stage, and I’m happy to start another season,” Llull told Real Madrid TV.

The veteran guard also explained the role he wants to play within the team: “My goal is to help the team and try to be an example on a daily basis for the new players and the younger guys.”

Real Madrid’s goals for the new season

Llull has set ambitious goals for Real Madrid: “Try to reach the finals of every competition we play in and try to win them. That is the overall objective. In the short term, we need to adapt to all the new players and for them to adapt to what Real Madrid is about.”

The captain also discussed new head coach Pedro Martínez, highlighting his approach to the game: “He has a very dynamic style of play, with aggressive defense, and that can be good for the players we have and for the team.”

20th season: following the example of Felipe Reyes and Rudy Fernández

Llull is entering his 20th season with Real Madrid, but he prefers not to look back and instead approach the campaign as if it were his first.

The veteran wants to continue giving 100 percent and inspire the team’s new players, just as Felipe Reyes and Rudy Fernández did for him during his own early years at the club.

“Defending this jersey means never giving up”

Llull also explained what wearing the Real Madrid jersey means to him: “Defending this jersey means never giving up on a game, always fighting until the end and showing that character and passion for defending this badge every day.”

Pedro Martínez’s Real Madrid will play their first preseason friendly on Saturday against Río Breogán in Pontevedra. Their Liga Endesa season will begin on September 27 against Unicaja at the Movistar Arena.
