The San Antonio Spurs are considering having Victor Wembanyama come off the bench again in Tuesday’s Emirates NBA Cup championship game against the New York Knicks, coach Mitch Johnson said. The plan mirrors the semifinal win over Oklahoma City, when Wembanyama was managed carefully.
Back after missing 12 games with a left calf strain, Wembanyama played 21 minutes and scored 22 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter. “We’re going to discuss it,” Wembanyama said, while Devin Vassell stressed the long-term focus on his health and backed the staff’s minutes plan.
Johnson noted the decision can’t be made in isolation, as it affects rotations and lineup combinations, and added the Spurs are still learning how to handle Wembanyama’s workload. Although the NBA Cup final doesn’t count in the standings, it does count toward the 65-game awards threshold.
