Russell Westbrook has officially announced his retirement from basketball, bringing an end to an outstanding 18-year NBA career. The former MVP shared the news on social media, deciding to walk away from the game on his own terms.

According to ESPN, Westbrook had received offseason interest from the Sacramento Kings and Washington Wizards, but ultimately chose retirement instead of signing with another team.
The No. 4 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics finishes his career with averages of 20.9 points, 6.9 rebounds and 8.0 assists per game.
Westbrook retires as the NBA’s all-time leader in triple-doubles with 209, surpassing Oscar Robertson’s long-standing record in 2021. He spent 11 seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, won the 2017 NBA MVP award, and helped lead the franchise to the 2012 NBA Finals alongside Kevin Durant and James Harden.
