Renewed momentum for creation of in-season NBA tournament

There’s renewed momentum for the creation of a future in-season NBA tournament among the league’s 30 teams, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The NBA and National Basketball Players Association have been discussing elements of the tournament, which could become part of the calendar as soon as the 2022-23 or 2023-24 season. Negotiations have centered on an in-season tournament that would begin with pool play as part of the regular-season schedule prior to teams with the best records advancing to an eight-team, single-elimination tournament that would culminate prior to Christmas, sources said.

The proposal also would shorten the regular season from 82 to 78 games. The sides have discussed a purse of $1 million per player for the winning team, and the players could see more financial and competitive incentives before an agreement on the format.

The Detroit Pistons will sign two players from their affiliated G League team, the Motor City Cruise: Point guard Derrick Walton (13.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 7.6 apg) and swingman Cassius Stanley (9.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg).

JB Bickerstaff reportedly signing long-term extension with Cavs

Coach JB Bickerstaff and the Cleveland Cavs have reached an agreement for a contract extension until the end of the 2027 season.

The Cavs surprised everyone in the early part of the regular season this year, showing improvements on both sides of the court.

Hawks sign Cat Barber

The Atlanta Hawks will sign Cat Barber to a 10-day hardship deal.

Barber went undrafted in 2016 out of NC State and had been playing for the Hawks’ G League affiliate.

Celtics to have eight players out vs. Bucks for Christmas Day

The Boston Celtics will have a lot of players out for Christmas Day due to covid.

Per ESPN, The Boston Celtics had another five players officially enter the NBA’s health and safety protocols Friday afternoon, further battering one of the hardest-hit rosters in the league as the omicron variant of COVID-19 sweeps through the NBA.

Guard C.J. Miles, forwards Aaron Nesmith and Justin Jackson, and centers Enes Freedom and Bruno Fernando were all added to the protocols, bringing Boston’s current official count of players in protocols to 12 ahead of Saturday’s Christmas Day showdown with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Eight players — those five plus guard Josh Richardson and forwards Sam Hauser and Grant Williams — will be out for Saturday’s game. Another four — guard Brodric Thomas, forwards Jabari Parker and Juancho Hernangomez and center Al Horford — are questionable to play because of the protocols after entering them last week.

Nets’ Kyrie Irving to make season debut on January 17 at Cleveland?

Kyrie Irving is expected to make season debut in January.
Irving will be able to play only in road games because he did not get the vaccine yet.

Per ESPN, Kyrie Irving will not join the Brooklyn Nets on their two-game road trip to Southern California.

Irving entered the NBA’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols shortly after agreeing to a return to the Nets for road games.

Irving has to ramp up once he’s cleared. The Nets haven’t seen Irving on the court yet.

“No, we haven’t,” Nash said, when asked if he has seen Irving on the court yet. “He’s still in protocols. And he needs ramp up, so we won’t see Kyrie on this trip.”

After these two upcoming games in Los Angeles, the Nets are not on the road again until Jan. 5 at Indiana. After that, they don’t play another road game until Jan. 12 at Chicago.

Irving could make his debut On Jan. 17th at Cleveland.

Raptors to sign Daniel Oturu

The Toronto Raptors add Daniel Oturu to the roster with a ten-day deal, Adrian Wojnarowski reports.

The big man, released by the Grizzlies during last preseason, was playing in the G League with the Windy City Bulls (20.5 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 1.9 bpg).
The Raptors have 8 players in the league’s health and safety protocols.
 

Los Angeles Lakers reportedly signing Darren Collison, Stanley Johnson to 10-day hardship deals

The Los Angeles Lakers will sign pointguard  Darren Collison and swingman Stanley Johnson to 10-day hardship deals, Adrian Wojnarowski reports.

Collison, 34, had retired from basketball after the 2019 season.

Johnson was playing in G League with the South Bay Lakers (15.3 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 2.1 apg, 2.1 spg).

Celtics to sign Al-Farouq Aminu, Norvel Pelle

The Boston Celtics are signing forward Al-Farouq Aminu and center Norvel Pelle to 10-day hardship deals, Shams Charania reports.

Aminu was released by Spurs during the preseason, while Pelle was playing in the G League with the Cleveland Charges (8.9 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 1.1 bpg in 22 minutes).

 

Blazers say CJ McCollum’s right lung is fully healed

Following further evaluation, including a CT scan on Wednesday, Portland guard CJ McCollum’s right lung is fully healed after suffering a pneumothorax earlier this month, the team announced today.

McCollum has been cleared for non-contact drills, increased conditioning, and shooting. He will continue his recovery protocol and will be reevaluated next week. Further updates will be provided as appropriate.

In 24 games this season (all starts), McCollum has averaged 20.6 points (42.4% FG, 39.3% 3-PT, 70.0% FT), 4.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.08 steals and 35.3 minutes.

NBA nearing agreement with NBPA to lessen quarantine period for Covid-positive players

The NBA is nearing an agreement with the NBPA to lessen the quarantine period for Covid-positive players, in a model similar to the NFL’s new plan.

In some testing cases, the current 10-day quarantine protocol could be shortened to clear players for return. Based upon testing, the agreement could allow players to shorten quarantines down to six days, per sources.

The NBA and NBPA have been consulting with their own infectious disease specialists and studying research models in the UK and elsewhere.

Cheick Diallo reportedly signing with Pistons

The Detroit Pistons reached an agreement with Cheick Diallo for a 10-day contract.

The big man from Kansas was playing in the G League with MotorCity Cruise (14.2 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 1.2 bpg).

Diallo spent last season in Europe between Avtodor Saratov and Fuenlabrada.

Dallas Mavs to sign George King, Carlik Jones, Brandon Knight

Dallas Mavericks active on the market after 4 players entered the league’s anti-Covid protocol.

The Texan team has formalized the arrival of former Trento George King with a 10-day contract, and has reached an agreement with two comboguards from the G League: rookie Carlik Jones (20.2 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 4.4 apg with the Texas Legends ) and Brandon Knight (20.9 ppg, 5.4 apg, 1.7 spg with Sioux Falls Skyforce).

 

 

Joe Johnson reportedly returning to Celtics

Joe Johnson is signing a 10-day deal with the Boston Celtics, Adrian Wojnarowski reports.

The Celtics drafted Johnson with the 10th pick of the 2001 NBA Draft.

The 7-time All Star is expected to play tonight against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Charlie Brown to sign with Mavs

Charlie Brown is joining the Dallas Mavericks.
Dallas has Reggie Bullock, Tim Hardaway Jr, Josh Green and Maxi Kleber in the NBA’s health and safety protocols. In their absence, the Mavericks have added Marquese Chriss and Theo Pinson. The team plans to add Brown and George King to that mix in the coming days.
Brown has previously played for the Atlanta Hawks and Oklahoma City Thunder. This season, Brown has been playing for the Delaware Blue Coats of the G League. In 11 games, Brown has averaged 16.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.

Wes Iwundu to join Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks are signing Wes Iwundu to ten-day contract.
Iwundu has played 41 games in the NBA last season between Pelicans and Mavs.
