Pelicans sign Sindarius Thornwell

The New Orleans Pelicans today announced that the team has signed free agent guard Sindarius Thornwell as a substitute player for the remainder of the 2019-20 season. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Thornwell, 6-4, 215, most recently played for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA G League, appearing in 40 games (26 starts) while averaging 9.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.4 steals in 29.0 minutes per contest. Selected 48th overall out of the University of South Carolina by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2017 NBA Draft, Thornwell has appeared in 137 career regular season games with the Los Angeles Clippers, holding averages of 2.5 points and 1.3 rebounds in 10.7 minutes.

Thornwell will wear #12 for the Pelicans.

William Howard reportedly joining ASVEL Villeurbanne

William Howard and ASVEL Villeurbanne agreed to a two-year contract, Matthieu Marot reports.

This year Howard played 36 G League games between the Salt Lake City and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, with averages of 12.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.6 assist.

NBA players must arrange own travel if they miss scheduled COVID-19 test next week

NBA players will be forced to arrange their own travel plans if they miss the scheduled COVID-19 test two days before their team’s departure to Orlando, according to a league memo reported by ESPN.

If a player drives to Orlando, they will have to pass two negative tests before returning to the court. Instead, if a player flies commercially, they will need three consecutive negative tests.

Players who have tested positive must undergo two negative tests before they will be medically cleared to enter the bubble.

NBA teams to scrimmage opponent from opposite conference in Orlando

NBA teams will scrimmage either an opponent from the opposite conference or against an unlikely first-round opponent from the same conference in Orlando, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Teams are set to arrive in Orlando starting next week. All players will quarantine in their rooms until they test negative twice for COVID-19.

Training camp is scheduled to begin from July 9th-29th, and the NBA season resumes on July 30th.

NBA, NBPA agree to list of approved social messages for jerseys

The NBA and NBPA reached an agreement Friday on social justice messages that can be displayed above the number on the back of jerseys. Players can have a first and second choice, but they do not have to use the space for a social message if they do not want to.

Lakers assistant Lionel Hollins not going to Orlando with team

Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Lionel Hollins will not join the team in Orlando after being “red-flagged” as a health concern, per Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

Haynes reports that Hollins, 66, was disappointed in not being able to be on the front lines, but understands this is the right decision. This was not an age-related situation, per Haynes.

Victor Oladipo decides to sit out NBA restart

Indiana Pacers star Victor Oladipo decided to sit out the NBA restart in Orlando, he told The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

“I really want to play, and as a competitor and teammate this is tearing me apart,” Oladipo told The Athletic.

“I have to be smart and this decision hasn’t been easy, but I truly believe continuing on the course I’m on and getting fully healthy for the 2020-21 season is the right decision for me.”

Gordon Hayward plans to leave NBA bubble for birth of child

Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward said he will leave the NBA’s bubble at Disney World for the birth of his fourth child if Boston is still playing.

Hayward’s wife is due to give birth in September. That means Hayward would have to spend several days away from his team during the playoffs. According to the NBA’s protocol, any player leaving the bubble has to quarantine for a minimum 10 days.

Donovan Mitchell on Rudy Gobert: Right now we’re good

Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell said that it’s no secret that he wasn’t happy with Rudy Gobert when he tested positive for COVID-19 but that he’s ready to move on.

Mitchell doesn’t view his on-court issues with Gobert as problematic: “There’s gonna be tension, there’s gonna be back-and-forth, it’s always gonna happen” on teams with two star players, he said. “Right now we’re good. We’re going out there ready to hoop.” 

Clippers coach Doc Rivers expects Lou Williams ‘to be with us’ in Orlando

Doc Rivers said that he expects Lou Williams to join the Los Angeles Clippers in Orlando. Veteran guard had previously said he was “50-50” on resuming his season because he did not want basketball games to distract people from the Black Lives Matter movement.

“As far as Lou, all indications [are] that yes, he is [playing]. Obviously, up until we get on the plane, anything can happen. But I do expect Lou to be with us. I would be very surprised if he’s not,” said Rivers.

Jacque Vaughn believed to be front-runner to coach Nets in 2020-21

The Brooklyn Nets elevated Jacque Vaughn to head coach to replace Kenny Atkinson in March and he’s under serious consideration to remain in the job permanently. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on his podcast that he believes Vaughn to be the front-runner to coach Brooklyn next season, the first of the team with Kevin Durant on the court.

Wojnarowski also said he’s not sure the fact the Nets are bringing a depleted team to Orlando will necessarily hurt Vaughn’s chances, but it won’t give him an opportunity to prove he’s the right coach for this team.

NBA to spend more than $150M to complete season at Disney World

The three-month completion of the 19-20 NBA season at Walt Disney World will cost the league more than $150 million, reports ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.

The league is housing 22 teams plus support staff at three resorts, has arranged for seven practice courts and is playing games at three arenas during the quarantine. The NBA is not calculating loss of ticket revenue in this estimate: the league projects to lose more than $1 billion in revenue due to COVID-19.

Portland signs Jaylen Adams as a substitute player

he Portland Trail Blazers have signed guard Jaylen Adams as a Substitute Player for the remainder of the 2019-20 season, it was announced today by president of basketball operations Neil Olshey.

Adams, 24, played for the Wisconsin Herd of the NBA G League during the 2019-20 season, posting averages of 21.5 points (48.6% FG, 40.7% 3-PT, 78.8% FT), 5.1 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.82 steals in 33 games (32 starts). He finished second in voting for the 2019-20 NBA G League Most Valuable Player Award.

After going undrafted out of St. Bonaventure in 2018, Adams (6-0, 225) signed a two-way contract with the Atlanta Hawks. He appeared in 34 games (one start) for the Hawks during the 2018-19 season, averaging 3.2 points (34.5% FG, 33.8% 3-PT, 77.8% FT), 1.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists.

He will wear No. 10 for the Trail Blazers.

Trey Burke joins Dallas Mavs

Trey Burke signed a contract until the end of the season with the Dallas Mavericks, the team announced.

The pointguard out of Michigan started the year for the Philadelphia 76ers, where he averaged 5.9 points and 2.1 assist over 25 games.

Burke will take Cauley-Stein’s place on the roster.

J.R. Smith signs with Los Angeles Lakers

J.R. Smith signed his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, Adrian Wojnarowski reports.

The veteran guard owns career averages of 12.5 points and 2.1 assist shooting 37% from beyond the arc on 5167 attempts.

The player has a bone bruise in his left knee and won’t be able to travel and play in Florida.

Nuggets closed practice facilities due to Coronavirus

After positive tests for the coronavirus within the traveling party headed to Orlando, the Denver Nuggets have closed team’s practice facility for several days, sources tell ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. 

Facility was locked to players and staff starting Saturday, and could open again later this week. Next few days of testing will determine when facility re-opens to players and staff in Denver.

Wizards GM Sheppard supports Bertans’ decision to skip the remainder of the season

In an interview with The Athletic’s Fred Katz, Washington Wizards GM Tommy Sheppard has supported Davis Bertans’ decision to sit out the remainder of the NBA season.

“We certainly support his reasons for not playing. We know how much Davis means to this team moving forward”, he said. Bertans averaged a career-high 15.4 points per game for the Wizards this season.
