Reggio Emilia reportedly agreed to terms with Josh Bostic

Unahotels Reggio Emilia has reached an agreement with Josh Bostic, according to La Gazzetta di Reggio.
The American will be back in Italy for the third time after having played in Serie A with Caserta and Sassari.
Bostic spent the past two seasons with Arka Gdynia averaging 20ppg, 5rpg and 3.3apg in PLK and 13ppg, 3.3rpg and 3apg in EuroCup in 2019-2020.

New Zealand Breakers land Lamar Patterson

The NZ Breakers have signed former Brisbane Bullets’ star Lamar Patterson to a one-year deal, further bolstering their already impressive roster for NBL21.

The 28-year-old Patterson earned himself All-NBL First Team honours in each of his two seasons in the league as a member of the Bullets.

Representatives of Patterson, who has played 40 NBA games, approached the Breakers last month after learning Scotty Hopson was still mulling over a contract sent to him in March.

“No club can ignore Lamar Patterson if he comes knocking because he’s a superstar in this league and statistically has been the best Small Forward in the NBL for the last two seasons,” said Breakers owner Matt Walsh.

“It’s evident after so much bad luck last season our fortunes have changed.”

Patterson suited up 40-times for the Atlanta Hawks over two seasons, playing an average of 10.9 minutes a game.

However, it is in the NBL he has shone, averaging 21 points, six rebounds, and 4.6 assists over 28 games for last season.

The American import set his season-high 36 points in 33 minutes against the Breakers in December, scoring double figures 27-times in 28 games.

Patterson scored 20 points or more 15-times during the season and 30 points or more 5-times. He also recorded three double-doubles.

“Lamar is a proven guy all over the world, and we had major issues trying to stop him when we played him,” said Breakers Head Coach Dan Shamir.

“We are incredibly happy about this pickup because we wanted a player who can do it all.

“Lamar Patterson and Scotty Hopson are similar players, both of them pick and roll with similar size.

“Lamar is slightly better in the low post, and is harder to stop around the rim. Hopson is a marginally better player on the open floor.

“The signing of Lamar means we now have one of the best starting units I’ve ever coached.”

In 2019, his first season with the Bullets, Patterson averaged 18.1 points 6.5 rebounds and 3.7 assists over 22 appearances, including hitting double figures in 21 of those games.

The acquisition of Patterson means the Breakers have now filled eight of the ten roster spots for NBL21.

NBL21 will see 10 man roster limits following the Covid pandemic with clubs only allowed to sign two imports this season – although a “Next Star” like RJ Hampton sits outside the roster.

Matt Walsh says the Breakers will be signing a “Next Star” for NBL21.

Lamar Patterson will arrive in Auckland in early October, with NBL21 expected to tip off around December 3.

Italian Serie A2 and Serie B could start on November 15

Lega Nazionale Pallacanestro, the organising body for Italian Serie A2 and Serie B (Italy’s 2nd and 3rd tier), will reportedly propose to Italian Basketball Federation a start on November 15 in order to minimise the number of games played behind closed doors, according to Superbasket.

Both leagues would be preceded by Supercup tournament, which would start on October 11 for Serie B and October 14 for Serie A2. LNP is reportedly expecting to play its leagues at reduced capacity later this fall, and full capacity by January 2021.

Luka Garza withdraws from Draft, will return to Iowa

Luka Garza has withdrawn from the 2020 NBA Draft and will return to Iowa. “I love this place too much to leave it,” he said in a Sunday news conference.

Garza lost the two-man race for last season’s Wooden Award and will be a projected national player of the year in 2021. The center, who recently received an invite to the NBA combine, said he “felt strongly” he would have been drafted and said he had offers in Europe.

“It’s been really strange and difficult with COVID-19,” Garza said. “It added a lot of uncertainty. At the end of the day, I felt very confident that I wanted to come back and finish my career at the University of Iowa.”

Ilya Platonov joins BC Nizhny on four-year contract

Ilya Platonov signed a four-year contract with BC Nizhny Novgorod, as announced by the russian team.
The 22-year-old forward spent several years with Lokomotiv Kuban.

Zoran Lukic, head coach of BC “Nizhny Novgorod”:

– For several years, the coaching staff of Nizhny Novgorod followed Ilya. He is an athletic player who has a very good shot from long-range . Last season, he was unable to fully demonstrate his talent due to injury. I am sure that it will not affect his future career in any way, and he will continue to progress.

Ilya can play both in third and fourth positions . I hope that over time he will be able to replace Pavel Antipov. It is extremely important for me that Ilya sees Nizhny Novgorod as the next stage of his career.

Henk Norel retires at 32: “I don’t want another knee surgery”

Henk Norel announced his retirement.
The Dutch big man said that he doesn’t want another knee surgery after having five procedures during his career.

Norel joined Heroes Den Bosch last season and made the debut last January, 16 months after the surgery he had in September 2018.

“Heroes wanted to keep me. The club was willing to let me practice less and play fewer games. But I didn’t like that. That’s not fair, not to the club and not to myself. When I play basketball, I want to go for it, not just worry about my knees” Norel told BD. “Basketball has always been my life and it suddenly comes to an end. I will really continue to come to Heroes in De Maaspoort to watch games and soon play again at a lower level. I love this game too much for that. But active top sport, that’s over for me”.

Bursaspor announced Chris Jones’ departure for Tel Aviv

Nate Jawai officially re-signs with Cairns Taipans

The Cairns Taipans have retained Nathan Jawai on a two-year deal. The agreement will see Jawai committed to his hometown team for at least seven years of his career that began as a Cairns Basketball junior recruited from Bamaga.

Jawai remains one of the most successful products of Far North Queensland and continues to be a dominant force in the NBL as one of Australia’s most experienced and credentialed big men. In 2019-20 Jawai suited up for every game to average 8.0 points and 3.4 rebounds, while leading the team as a player-voted co-captain.

Taipans Head Coach Mike Kelly acknowledged the special loyalty between Cairns and Jawai and said that it had been rewarding to see his development over the last few years.

“I love that Nate has continued to grow in all aspects of his game, and particularly in the way that he approaches his role.

“He’s got the ability to influence a game on the floor as well as off it, and his positive influence on the team has been really important,” said Kelly.

“We want to continue to build with him and he’s really bought into this group which has been fun to watch. He’s committed to this club and I’m excited to see him have another great season in orange.”

In December, Jawai will suit up for his fifth consecutive season for the Taipans – after originally signing for three years in 2016 and then a one-year contract in 2019.

The two-year deal will keep the Queensland State Government ambassador at home potentially for the remainder of his playing career, and Jawai said that it was his ambitions for the club and for his future that were the main factors in re-signing.

“Last year was obviously really fun and really enjoyable to be part of. We have a really unique group, the chemistry was undeniable and playing under Coach Kelly just continues to get better,” said Jawai.

“I want to win a Championship for Cairns and we know last season we weren’t too far off. Now we are all just really, really motivated.”

“I owe a lot to this community and to basketball, and that is something I’ve been reflecting about a lot during this extended off-season.

“The club and I have been working on something behind-the-scenes that I cannot wait to reveal, and I’m really looking forward to what the future holds.”
