Euroleague to award annual wild card for next season to 2020-21 ABA Liga champion

This year’s ABA League champion will have a place in the 2021-22 edition of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague, as confirmed by Eurohoops. EuroLeague Basketball had officially marked the ABA champion as “priority holder” for a wild card in the last change of format, and it has been confirmed that ABA will have a team in competition next season.

ABA’s priority is because it is the only Euroleague-represented league that does not have a club with either a long or a short term license. The decision has also been easier after UNICS securing one of the two places reserved for Eurocup finalists. The 18th and final team for next season will be, according to Eurohoops, one between Zenit St Petersburg, Valencia and Virtus Bologna.

Vincent Poirier reportedly joining Real Madrid

Free agent big man Vincent Poirier has agreed to a multi-year deal with Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid, according to Jose Luis Sanchez.

Poirier is expected to join Real Madrid in the next few days but can only play in the Liga ACB this season as he can’t be registered to play in the EuroLeague until next year.

The French center was waived by the New York Knicks after the trade deadline.

30-year old forward Ivan Aska has signed with ABA 2 league side Rabotnicki Skopje, sources told Sportando. Murray State alumni last played for Israeli club Hapoel Hevel Modiein where he averaged 21 points and 8.6 rebounds per game last season.

Aska is also a US Virgin Island international and this season, he represented them in the AmeriCup 2022 qualifiers. Over the 4 played games, he averaged 20.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest.
