Pedro Martínez outlines his vision
After the first two preseason games, Real Madrid is beginning to take on some of the characteristics of the teams coached by Pedro Martínez in recent years.
Speaking to the club’s media, the new head coach explained the first principles he wants to establish, highlighting the areas that will be the team’s main priorities.
“I would like us to have a proactive defense, an aggressive defense, to play fast and to be able to share the ball. These would be the priorities and the basic factors that we want to see as soon as possible.”
“The players’ mentality has been extraordinary”
Real Madrid opened preseason with a 110-102 loss to Río Breogán, before responding with a dominant 121-80 victory over a depleted Kosner Baskonia team that had barely been able to work five-on-five.
Martínez has been highly positive about the team’s work during the opening weeks, particularly praising the players’ attitude.
“The players’ mentality has been extraordinary. From the first day, they have been trying to do things with a very good mentality, training with tremendous effort.”
“This is a very important moment for us because we are laying the foundations for what we will want to do later in the competition.”
Everyone on the same page
For Martínez, it will be essential for the entire roster to share the same understanding of the team’s priorities on both ends of the floor.
“It is fundamental that all the players are on the same page and that the coaches are able to be clear about our priorities on offense and defense.”
“We have to trust that the work we are doing to make those priorities important will help us in games.”
Veterans leading the way
The more experienced players are also playing a crucial role in helping the newcomers adapt quickly to Real Madrid’s demands.
“The more experienced players are setting an example every day and leading the group in an outstanding way.”
“We count on them because they know what it means to wear this jersey and they also have experience playing at the highest level, which is what Real Madrid regularly does.”
Martínez believes the veterans must show the way to the new arrivals, some of whom have little or no EuroLeague experience.
“They are showing the way to the new players, who have to learn it and don’t have much time to do so. That combination between the more experienced players and those who have been here for less time is vitally important right now.”
Final preseason tests before the Super Cup
Real Madrid will now compete in the Costa del Sol Tournament, facing La Laguna Tenerife on Friday and Unicaja on Saturday.
Those will be the team’s final preseason games before the start of the competitive season.
On September 18, Real Madrid will make its official debut in the EuroLeague Super Cup, facing Dubai Basketball in the semifinals.
