Pedro Martínez spoke to the media in the press room at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi after the victory over Olympiacos in the EuroLeague Super Cup final. Our head coach shared his thoughts after winning the first title of the season:
“I’m very happy to win this title. First of all, because sometimes you value a competition more when you win it against great teams, and in this competition, there were four of the best teams in Europe.”
“It’s very important for us because we worked very hard during the preseason, with many new players. For me, it’s excellent to see that my players have a great mentality and that they believe in the day-to-day work we did during the preseason.”
Does this title reinforce your confidence?
“Yes, I completely agree. I was just talking to our president, Florentino Pérez, and he was very happy. Last season was difficult. It’s good for us, both individually and collectively. I hope it gives us more energy to keep working because we have to improve. We need to have a better understanding between coaches and players in order to play better because, in the future, the other teams will improve and we have to do the same.”
A starting point
“We consider the official competition to have started yesterday; we celebrated finishing the preseason before traveling here. I’m happy with the players’ mentality on a day-to-day basis. They believe in what we are doing, they are playing with a lot of effort and they get along very well with each other. They have very good chemistry internally, from what I see when we are at the hotel or before and after practices. That makes me think that, with work, we will continue to improve.
It’s a good start for our confidence. On Monday, we have to have the best practice possible, whether we had won or lost. Now we are celebrating the present, but we have to be aware that we have only been together for a short time and that we need to improve.”
