Despite an active seven-game losing streak and the worst record in the league, the New Orleans Pelicans could look to the future with optimism thanks to the emergence of rookie center Derik Queen.
The former Maryland big man became the first center to record a triple-double with at least 30 points in his rookie season.
Against the Spurs, Queen posted 33 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 4 blocks. In the third quarter — which the Pelicans won 45–23 — he single-handedly scored just two points fewer than San Antonio (21 to 23), shooting perfectly from the field while also dishing out four assists.
“Special night for him,” Pelicans interim coach James Borrego said of Queen. “He was great. He did a really good job defensively on the boards, controlled the offense. We ran a lot of our stuff through him. He was fantastic.”
The No. 13 pick of last year’s Draft is averaging 12.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game.
