Paulius Motiejunas: “Another league in Europe bad idea. EuroLeague expansion? Inevitable”

Paulius Motiejunas, CEO of the EuroLeague, gave an interview to the microphones of Eurohoops in which he touched on many sensitive issues, including the NBA Europe project and the expansion of the EuroLeague. Below are his statements.

Motiejunas on the possible cooperation between EuroLeague, NBA and FIBA: “We are ready and open to any scenario. Our goal is to strengthen the EuroLeague and to find the right partners to accompany us on this path. If anyone wants to contribute to this effort, they are welcome”.

Tatum said the intent is not to replace the Euroleague: “That doesn’t seem to be consistent with the announcements that have been made. In any case, like I said, I don’t see how the new league would benefit European basketball. There has been a lot of talk about new markets, investments and the arrival of new football clubs. What we don’t hear is how this new league intends to support and preserve the existing fan base, its culture and traditions, the distinctive style of European basketball and the growth of local talent”.

If he knows any details about the NBA Europe project: “We don’t have any details other than what has been announced and reported in the media. In any case, I think another European league is a bad idea and would not work. I say this from a fan’s point of view. A new league would confuse fans, fragment commercial opportunities and scatter player talent. That is bad, even for the NBA and FIBA”.

On the expansion of the EuroLeague to 20 teams: “The decision should be made as soon as possible. Many factors will influence the decision. Ultimately, I think expansion is inevitable, but the question is when. There is strong and growing interest from teams with solid plans to join the league, and we believe expansion could help create additional space for them. We need to analyze the impact on the schedule, make sure we maintain competitiveness and quality, and also ensure that any further changes add long-term value. All of this will be analyzed and ultimately the shareholders will make the decision”.
