Patrick Ewing is set to return to an NBA bench. According to The Athletic and ESPN, the Georgetown and New York Knicks legend will join the Washington Wizards’ coaching staff as an assistant to Brian Keefe.
For Ewing, this marks a return to Washington, where he already began his NBA coaching career in the 2002–03 season as an assistant. Over the years, he has also worked on the coaching staffs of the Houston Rockets, Orlando Magic, and Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets, taking on roles that went well beyond just developing big men.
After a long assistant coaching career, Ewing fulfilled his dream in 2017 by coaching his alma mater Georgetown, leading the Hoyas for six seasons until 2023. Later, in 2024, the New York Knicks brought him back into the organization in an ambassador role.
Regarded as one of the greatest centers in basketball history, Ewing was the first overall pick in the 1985 NBA Draft, made 11 All-Star appearances, won Olympic gold with the 1992 Dream Team, and was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. He is now ready to bring his experience to the Wizards, who are continuing their rebuilding process under Brian Keefe.
