There was no contest in the highly anticipated final of the Greek Cup. Panathinaikos claimed the trophy with a decisive 79-68 victory over Olympiacos Piraeus, in a matchup that seemed to slip away from the “Red-and-Whites” during a one-sided first half.
In the post-game press conference, head coach Georgios Bartzokas didn’t mince words when describing his team’s performance, appearing visibly disappointed and self-critical.
“Congratulations to Panathinaikos; they played a great game and deserved the Cup,” Bartzokas began. “Our performance—both individually and as a team in terms of effort—was well below expectations. It was a complicated week, but that’s no excuse.”
“We showed doubt and uncertainty throughout the game. Our three-point shooting was abysmal, which is especially frustrating considering many of those shots were wide open. Even on defense, we misread situations: we allowed an easy layup when we could have committed a foul without sending the opponents to the free-throw line.”
The coach’s closing remarks were a mix of bitterness and a challenge for the future: “Our approach to a final of this magnitude was completely wrong. In the end, we got what we deserved. I wonder if it’s even possible to play worse than this.”
