North Carolina is reportedly moving toward Michael Malone as the next leader of its men’s basketball program. ESPN reported that the school intends to make Malone its next coach, signaling a major shift toward an NBA-tested profile.
For Malone, it would mark a high-profile jump into college basketball after building his reputation at the NBA level. He won an NBA championship with the Denver Nuggets in 2022-23 and has been credited with 510 career wins as an NBA head coach.
If completed, the move would give the Tar Heels one of the most recognizable coaching hires in the sport. As of now, though, the reporting describes North Carolina’s intention, not an official university announcement.
