North Carolina have decided to move on from Hubert Davis, ending his run as head coach after five seasons. The decision came only days after the painful first-round NCAA tournament loss to VCU, a game in which the Tar Heels blew a 19-point second-half lead.
The university officially described it as a “leadership change,” while Davis said on social media that he had been let go and hopes to coach again soon. North Carolina also said it will honor the terms of his contract, which still carries about $5.3 million in guaranteed money.
Davis leaves with a 125-54 record, after a tenure marked by both major highs and difficult setbacks, including a run to the 2022 national title game. His departure now opens one of the most prestigious and closely watched jobs in college basketball.
