In the summer leading up to EuroBasket 2025, a soap opera has emerged in Slovenia involving Josh Nebo and Vlatko Cancar, two players that Olimpia Milano did not release to the Slovenian national team due to their physical condition. Speaking to SportKlub, Sasa Doncic, sporting director of the national team and father of Luka Doncic, shared his thoughts.
On Josh Nebo: “Josh Nebo never told me, in several conversations, that he wouldn’t play, not even after his last injury. The club received the invitation on July 3. Two weeks later, we were informed that he wasn’t available to play. I respect coach Ettore Messina’s position that players’ health is important, but we also have our own reports and expert evaluations. We know what we’re talking about. The situation was unusual. How should we proceed? At the moment, we are focused on this EuroBasket. After the tournament, we will have to address the matter, including discussions with the Slovenian government. Josh Nebo received citizenship to play basketball, so if he doesn’t want to, I don’t see the point in continuing our collaboration.”
On Vlatko Cancar: “Vlatko has never had problems playing for the national team. His decision only became an issue after signing with Milano, which is a bit hard to understand. But that’s how things go“.
