The NBPA is taking a stronger stance against the second apron introduced in the 2023 CBA. In an interview with Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic, new executive director David Kelly said the system is bad for fans, players, coaches and general managers, adding that “it’s gone too far.”
Kelly believes the restrictions are forcing franchises to break up competitive rosters once they become too expensive, while also reducing player choice and the impact of free agency. Even though players remain guaranteed between 49% and 51% of Basketball Related Income, the union argues that the current system limits investment, growth and fan interest.
The issue could become a central point in the next CBA discussions. The current agreement runs through the 2029-30 season but includes an early opt-out opportunity, and Kelly, along with NBPA president Fred VanVleet, has already made the union’s direction clear: preparing for the next negotiation and seeking to soften or unwind the current apron system.
