The NBPA is already preparing players for a potential labor battle with the NBA over the first- and second-apron system. Executive director David Kelly said he is “100 percent” preparing for the possibility of a work stoppage.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, cited by Joe Vardon of The Athletic, Kelly said the union is willing to go “as far as necessary” to push for changes to the current salary restrictions. The CBA runs through 2030, with an opt-out available in 2029, but the battle lines are already forming.
The NBPA is particularly concerned about the impact of the apron system on veterans and role players, as well as the recent trend of stars signing for less than the maximum allowed. The NBA has countered that total player salaries have risen by roughly $1.3 billion since the second apron was implemented, with pay increasing by about 30% across all player classes.
