The NBA has presented the Board of Governors with three structured anti-tanking proposals, all of which would significantly reshape the current draft lottery system. According to ESPN, the concepts are now expected to be refined before a formal vote in May.
All three options share one key feature: expanding the lottery pool to include teams that currently are not part of it, including play-in teams and even some first-round playoff exits. The concepts include an 18-team flattened-odds lottery, a 22-team two-year-record model, and a “five-by-five” system that protects the five worst teams from falling too far.
Adam Silver has made clear that the league intends to act and that the incentive structure will change. The decision to schedule a special meeting in May shows how urgent the NBA considers the issue ahead of next season.
