The NBA announced Sunday that New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado was suspended two games, while Phoenix Suns center Mark Williams received a one-game ban, both without pay. The incident happened in the third quarter of Saturday’s Pelicans-Suns, a 123-114 Phoenix win.
The altercation started after a foul on Alvarado as he tried to fight through a Williams screen to stay on Collin Gillespie, who opened the game 5-for-5 from three. After contact escalated, the two grabbed each other and threw punches, landing right hands before being separated.
Both players were ejected and neither spoke afterward. Suns coach Jordan Ott pointed to competitiveness and fatigue, saying “Obviously, it happens” and referencing the “second night of a back-to-back” as a factor.
