NBA players believe they should receive a share of the revenue generated by NBA Europe, which is targeting an October 2027 launch. NBPA executive director David Kelly raised the issue as plans for the new competition continue to develop.
“It’s clearly being built on the backs of current NBA players and prior NBA players, on the whole cachet that they brought to this league,” Kelly told Front Office Sports. “To start a rival league that they do not participate in, or participate in the economics of, we have a very serious problem with that.”
The current collective bargaining agreement gives players approximately 51% of basketball-related income, but the NBPA is not demanding the same percentage from NBA Europe. Kelly is instead seeking a good-faith payment, with governance, franchise fees and revenue sharing still among the project’s unresolved issues.
