NBA in Europe only with FIBA: Euroleague excluded

Important news for the NBA's expansion project in Europe: as of today, no place for the EuroLeague?

Important news for the NBA’s expansion project in Europe: According to FIBA Europe board member Darius Guedelis, the NBA will only come to Europe with the cooperation of FIBA. Given the ongoing differences between the EuroLeague and FIBA, the project would therefore exclude the EuroLeague. Below are Guedelis’ comments as reported by Basketnews.

The words of Darius Guedelis: “If the NBA comes to Europe, it will only be with FIBA. The best thing for European basketball would be for the EuroLeague and FIBA to come to an agreement without relying on outside help from overseas. It is crucial to establish clear operating principles, calendars and other necessary elements, but we see that this is not happening at the moment. The results are not there yet and it seems that FIBA is focusing on other partners. FIBA wants to maintain a sporting principle: if teams win local championships or are ranked higher, they should have the opportunity to play in the highest level tournament. There is also a desire to have a calendar because of the windows: one or two per year. There is no going back: the windows are here to stay”.

2026 will bring big changes: “The EuroLeague and club contracts will end in May 2026. The spring-summer period will be a critical time when teams will decide where they want to play. Once the clubs have decided where they want to go, the moves will begin. The most important teams at the table will dictate the terms in terms of format and conditions”.
