The NBA has reportedly found no evidence that Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer funneled money through team sponsors to Kawhi Leonard in an attempt to circumvent the salary cap. ESPN reported the development, citing three people familiar with recent discussions between the league and the franchise.
The nearly year-long investigation, which began with allegations surrounding Leonard’s endorsement deal with Aspiration, has instead shifted toward the Clippers’ role in connecting the star with team sponsors. The NBA is also examining whether the organization failed to properly supervise its employees.
Other sponsorship agreements, including deals involving Daktronics and Boingo Wireless, have also been reviewed. However, according to sources cited by ESPN, the league has found no evidence that Ballmer used those companies to funnel money to Leonard.
The NBA presented its preliminary findings to the Clippers in late July, with both sides now negotiating a potential resolution. Ballmer, however, has reportedly made clear that he would not accept any finding suggesting that he or the Clippers intentionally attempted to circumvent the salary cap, potentially leaving arbitration as an option.
The investigation could also affect Leonard’s proposed trade to the Toronto Raptors, which was agreed upon in June but remains on hold because of uncertainty over possible penalties. So far, however, there is no indication that Leonard’s contract could be voided.
