The Emirates NBA Cup could be leaving Las Vegas, with the NBA openly discussing moving the championship game starting next season. The league has acknowledged that the neutral-site format has lacked the energy and enthusiasm it originally envisioned.
Despite that, the tournament has met many of its goals, boosting early-season interest and earning player buy-in, aided by the more than $500,000 prize per player on the winning team. “I think it’s registering well,” said CJ McCollum, citing the intensity and distinct feel of Cup games.
What hasn’t clicked are the Vegas games themselves, which have featured noticeable empty seats over three seasons. That contrast with the quarterfinals played at home helped drive the decision to rethink the neutral-site model moving forward.
