The NBA Board of Governors has approved a major reform of the Draft Lottery, starting with the 2027 NBA Draft.
The new format will expand the lottery from 14 to 16 teams, adding the eighth seed in each conference’s playoff picture. The league will also introduce the “3-2-1 Lottery” system to reduce incentives for tanking.
The three worst teams will receive lower chances at the No. 1 pick and will now have a draft floor of 12th. According to ESPN, the vote was 29-1, with only the Memphis Grizzlies voting against it.
