The sponsorship was vetted before Kawhi Leonard’s separate agreement that triggered a salary cap probe

Per ESPN, the NBA reviewed and approved a $300 million sponsorship deal between the LA Clippers and Aspiration in 2021, months before the green banking firm signed a $28 million personal deal with Kawhi Leonard. That latter contract has prompted an investigation into possible salary cap circumvention.

The 23-year team deal included a jersey patch and arena signage and complied with league approval rules. The player deal, however, wasn’t subject to NBA oversight under the CBA. The league has since hired Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz to investigate potential violations involving owner Steve Ballmer.

Commissioner Adam Silver said the league bears the burden of proof, with any disciplinary action ultimately reviewed by a neutral arbitrator. The investigation may extend beyond the 2026 NBA playoffs.
