NBA 2026-27 Power Rankings: Thunder lead the way as Knicks and Spurs chase the title

Oklahoma City has the deepest roster, New York begins its title defense and San Antonio targets the next step. Philadelphia and Miami headline a season reshaped by blockbuster moves

The defending champions and the strongest title favorites are not necessarily the same team. The New York Knicks own the crown, while the Oklahoma City Thunder remain the league’s benchmark for depth and balance. Meanwhile, Victor Wembanyama hopes to turn an NBA Finals defeat into championship fuel. Our 2026-27 NBA Power Rankings weigh talent, continuity and room for improvement heading into the season.

1. Oklahoma City Thunder
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren form the league’s most complete core. Losing Dort, Isaiah Joe and Wiggins removes proven rotation pieces, but Wallace, Mitchell and McCain offer replacements. Getting past San Antonio remains the ultimate test.

2. New York Knicks
Their championship confirmed Brunson’s leadership and a collective ceiling that rose dramatically in the playoffs. Continuity and confidence matter, but Mitchell Robinson’s departure leaves questions inside. Repeating will require fresh answers.

3. San Antonio Spurs
Wembanyama can reshape the entire championship race. Fox, Castle and Harper provide creation and talent, along with difficult decisions over touches and roles. After losing the Finals, the next step depends on late-game execution and collective maturity.

4. Detroit Pistons
Sixty wins cannot be dismissed because of an early playoff exit. Cunningham leads a physical team built around defense and paint dominance. Advancing further requires more answers when opponents take away their leader’s initial action.

5. Houston Rockets
VanVleet’s return should bring structure to an offense that too often struggled. Durant remains the offensive reference point, while Şengün and Amen Thompson must turn potential into consistency. Physicality, rebounding and defense make Houston a threat to the favorites.

6. Boston Celtics
Trading Jaylen Brown changes the team without erasing its organization or identity. Tatum becomes the unquestioned centerpiece, with Mazzulla providing a dependable framework. The biggest playoff question: who creates advantages when the 3-pointers stop falling?

7. Philadelphia 76ers
LeBron James, Brown, Maxey, Edgecombe and Embiid form a remarkable starting five. Turning that talent into a championship team requires health, accepted roles and reliable defense. Their ceiling belongs near the top; their uncertainty demands caution.

8. Toronto Raptors
Kawhi Leonard raises the ceiling of an improving group. Alongside Barnes, he can form a wing partnership capable of controlling both ends. Availability and his integration into Toronto’s movement-based offense will determine how dangerous the Raptors become.

9. Minnesota Timberwolves
LaMelo Ball and Edwards promise highlights and new offensive possibilities. Trading Randle and Naz Reid, however, weakens the frontcourt rotation. McDaniels and Gobert must preserve Minnesota’s defensive identity while the new backcourt finds its balance.

10. Denver Nuggets
With Jokić, Denver has a chance against anyone. Murray provides an elite second option, but Gordon’s health and the bench’s production remain crucial. DeRozan adds scoring; the question is how well this group can hold up defensively.

11. Miami Heat
Giannis Antetokounmpo transforms Miami’s outlook and expectations. Spoelstra has the tools to build a fierce defense and a devastating transition attack. Making Giannis and Adebayo work together in the half court is the central challenge.

12. Los Angeles Lakers
The Dončić era truly begins, with the ball, responsibility and expectations firmly in his hands. Reaves and Kessler are important complements, but depth remains a concern. Luka determines the ceiling; surviving his absences will help determine the floor.

13. Indiana Pacers
Haliburton’s return restores the foundation of Indiana’s system. Pace, ball movement and established chemistry could quickly bring the Pacers back into contention in the East. After such a serious injury, their true level will take time to assess.

14. Cleveland Cavaliers
Mitchell, Harden and Mobley provide enough talent to aim higher. Questions about depth and defensive reliability hold Cleveland back. In a stronger Eastern Conference, an impressive starting lineup alone might not be enough.

15. Orlando Magic
Banchero and Franz Wagner must move this project beyond potential. A coaching change offers an opportunity to evolve, but building a more fluid offense remains essential. Continuity becomes an advantage only when it produces improvement.

16. Atlanta Hawks
Jalen Johnson leads a team that has undergone a significant transformation. Energy and versatility should keep Atlanta competitive, while offensive creation remains a concern. Returning to the playoffs will be difficult in a crowded East.

17. Utah Jazz
Peterson, Keyonte George and Bailey offer upside, while Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. provide immediate quality. Hardy can finally coach with winning as the priority. Establishing roles and finding the right interior balance will determine how quickly Utah progresses.

18. Golden State Warriors
Curry can still change any game, but the veterans’ availability shapes everything. Butler and Porziņģis add further uncertainty to a fragile outlook. Lendeborg offers a chance to inject fresh energy and production.

19. Phoenix Suns
Booker remains the centerpiece of an offense filled with players looking for their own shot. Discipline and cooperation are needed to turn individual talent into efficient team basketball. The play-in range looks like the most realistic starting point.

20. Portland Trail Blazers
Morant and Lillard make Portland fascinating, but a crowded backcourt demands clear decisions. Avdija must retain meaningful touches, while Clingan anchors the defense. Sharpe’s absence makes the beginning of this new project even more complicated.

21. Washington Wizards
Trae Young, Anthony Davis and Dybantsa significantly raise Washington’s talent level. Building a coherent team that can defend and distribute responsibilities remains the challenge. The range of outcomes is enormous, particularly depending on Davis’ health.

22. Memphis Grizzlies
Cameron Boozer becomes the face of the rebuild, with major responsibilities from the start. Coward and several useful centers provide an interesting foundation. This season is primarily about identifying who belongs alongside the new cornerstone.

23. New Orleans Pelicans
Individual talent is available; a clear direction remains harder to identify. Zion must provide availability and reliability, while Fears and Queen need room to develop. Mosley faces the task of organizing a roster with plenty of players who need the ball.

24. Charlotte Hornets
Trading LaMelo opens a different chapter. Miller and Knueppel are central to the future, but injuries complicate the start and dependable advantage creation is missing. The long-term outlook is more encouraging than the immediate guarantees.

25. Los Angeles Clippers
Garland must carry a team weakened by departures and already dealing with injuries. Lue remains an asset, but sustained competitiveness is difficult to envision. Wagler represents an investment in the future.

26. Dallas Mavericks
Flagg is the centerpiece, with Irving providing the primary source of creation alongside him. The roster remains unbalanced and short on perimeter alternatives. Developing their young leader matters more than the standings, while further trades could reshape the team.

27. Chicago Bulls
Wilson and Buzelis give the rebuild direction, and Giddey’s passing can accelerate their development. Chicago should run and produce highlights. Defense and late-game execution, however, could keep the win total modest.

28. Brooklyn Nets
Randle and Porter can supply points, but the project depends mainly on developing the young backcourt. Opportunities will be plentiful; competitive certainty will not. Draft assets remain Brooklyn’s greatest resource for changing its outlook.

29. Milwaukee Bucks
Life after Giannis begins with plenty of usable players and few settled roles. Herro and Turner can support the team’s production, but further changes appear likely. Jenkins must establish an identity while the front office evaluates its trade options.

30. Sacramento Kings
Acuff will have the ball and the freedom to learn through mistakes. Around him are veterans with uncertain futures and young players who need development. Without a shared direction and defensive improvement, climbing out of the bottom will be difficult.
