Mike James, recently appointed co-captain of AS Monaco alongside Donatas Motiejunas, remains uncertain for Monaco’s EuroLeague opener against Olimpia Milano on Thursday evening. After undergoing back surgery earlier in the summer, the American has yet to receive medical clearance to return to the court.
During Monaco’s last domestic game against Strasbourg, James was sidelined but actively participated in team preparations from the sidelines, showcasing his new leadership role. AS Monaco head coach Sasa Obradovic addressed James’ status in a press conference on Sunday, stating: “We will see if he plays. He has started individual training, and there has been no negative reaction after the surgery. But he is not yet in optimal shape, and his return is still in the hands of the medical staff. I am waiting for their green light…”.
The club confirmed that the final decision will be made on game day, with James potentially joining his teammates for his first collective practice session on Wednesday. However, Nick Calathes will be unavailable for the entirety of October due to a knee injury.
