Milano, Alex Poythress agree to 1-year deal

Italian champion welcomes former Zenit and Maccabi big man

Olimpia Milano has reached an agreement until 2024 with Alex Poythress, 2.06, forward-center, born on 6 September 1993 in Savannah, Georgia, of Ivorian origins. “Poythress fits well with the type of team we have in mind, with a high level of physicality among the big men. He is a player who can play two positions and has done well in his previous experiences in the EuroLeague,” Olimpia’s general manager Christos Stavropoulos said. “I’m excited to play for a historic club like Olimpia Milan is and happy to compete for championships at the highest level, including in the EuroLeague. So, I feel ready to get started,” Alex Poythress said.

WHO HE IS – Born in Savannah, Poythress grew up in Clarksville, Tennessee, where he attended Northeast High School. In 2012 he moved to Kentucky for college and there he remained four seasons with 112 appearances and averaged 8.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game for his career. In his senior season, he had 10.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. During his tenure, Kentucky reached the NCAA’ s Final Four twice, losing the championship game in 2014 and the semifinal in 2015, although he couldn’t play due to and injury. In the NBA he played 52 games, between Philadelphia, Indiana, and Atlanta. He played 71 games in the G-League (averaging 20.0 points and 7.9 rebounds per game). In 2019/20 he played in China in Jilin and then at Galatasaray. The following season he moved to Zenit St. Petersburg where he stayed for two years. In his first season in the EuroLeague, he averaged 8.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game and shot 61.6 percent on twos. In his second season, he produced 7.7 points per game on 64.0 percent from the field and added 4.2 rebounds per game. In 2022, he won the VTB League title with Zenit. In the 2022/23 season, he played for Maccabi, averaging 7.8 points, 59.0% from the field, 3.6 rebounds per game, contributing to the Israeli championship triumph.

NOTES – Among his teammates at Kentucky University he had Devin Booker, Jamal Murray and Karl-Anthony Towns. His coach was John Calipari. He was named high school player of the year in 2012 in Tennessee.
