Miikka Muurinen fined €872 for driving without a license and speeding

Finnish basketball player Miikka Muurinen has been fined for endangering traffic safety and driving without the required driving entitlement.

Muurinen was ordered to pay 28 day-fines of €29 each, totaling €812. An additional €60 criminal victim surcharge brings the total amount to €872.

Caught driving at 76 km/h in a 40 km/h zone

According to the penalty order issued by the Finnish Prosecutor’s Office on May 28, Muurinen was driving a car on Mäkelänkatu in Helsinki on the afternoon of May 11.

Police measured his speed at 76 km/h in an area where the speed limit was 40 km/h. A 3 km/h safety deduction was applied to the measured speed.

According to the penalty order, the road was dry and traffic was normal. Muurinen had one passenger in the car.

His U.S. driver’s license had expired

Muurinen presented a U.S. driver’s license to police, but its validity had expired in September 2025. According to the prosecutor, he therefore did not have the required driving entitlement in Finland.

Muurinen was not handed a driving ban because he was not the holder of a valid driving entitlement. In practice, this means that he does not currently have a valid driver’s license in Finland.

Based on the registration number listed in the penalty order, Muurinen was driving a Land Rover Range Rover owned by a financing company.

Muurinen heads to Arkansas

At 19 years old, Muurinen is considered one of the biggest prospects in Finnish basketball.

He played for Partizan Belgrade last season, one of Europe’s major clubs, before leaving the team in mid-February.

The Finnish national team player will play for the University of Arkansas in the upcoming season.
