Fresh off winning the European title in the 100m breaststroke, Nicolò Martinenghi once again showed his deep connection to Pallacanestro Varese.
Speaking to Sky Sport after his triumph in Paris, the Italian swimmer was asked which famous basketball play best matched his latest achievement. While options included highlights from Victor Wembanyama, LeBron James and Stephen Curry, Martinenghi went in a completely different direction.
“I’d say Sakota’s buzzer-beater for Varese in Game 6 against Siena. Those are the moments nobody expects, and that’s why you enjoy them even more.”
Martinenghi was referring to Dusan Sakota’s unforgettable game-winning shot in Game 6 of the 2013 Italian League semifinal against Siena, which forced a decisive Game 7.
He then explained why that moment came to mind.
“That basket gave hope to so many Varese fans. I hope I’ve given hope to other people as well, especially those who, like me, don’t always go through happy moments.”
The Olympic and European champion’s comments once again highlighted his strong bond with his hometown club.
