Marko Guduric, guard/forward of Olimpia Milano, spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport ahead of the team’s clash in Belgrade against Partizan. Here are four key statements he shared with Giuseppe Nigro.
ON WHAT WENT WRONG LAST SEASON
“I don’t really know because I wasn’t here, but I think we now have a very good team, with a solid mix of experience, youth, and talent. I’m excited: this team deserves at least to reach the EuroLeague Playoffs, and so do the club and the organization, which are of the highest level. That’s why I believe our goal this year must be to make the Playoffs. Achieving that would be huge — the EuroLeague is very tough, with clubs investing significant resources, and the number of top-level teams has increased.”
ON THE DECISION TO JOIN MILANO
“I spoke a lot with the coach, and that was a big reason why I decided to come. I also had many conversations with GM Stavropoulos, and I really liked the project and the vision behind the club.”
ON THE TEAM’S GOALS
“I think the ambition is always to aim as high as possible. Talking with the guys and the staff, I understand we need to go step by step. Winning in Italy would already mean a successful season, given that last year the team missed out on both the league title and the Italian Cup. And in the EuroLeague, making the Playoffs would be a big step forward. But the season is long, and with more teams now in the EuroLeague, it’s very challenging.”
ON BEING A LEADER
“The word ‘leader’… I don’t really like it. To me, leadership means leading by example. Talking can be important, but the key is what you do. It’s about making sure everyone is aligned, in the locker room and then on the court — understanding the goals and putting the team above individuals. I believe we’re all leaders in our own way, and we’ll work in that direction: it’s a team game, and the team comes first. There’s no ‘I’, there’s ‘we’. We all need to be on the same page: believe in each other and in the coach. And we must have patience.”
