Legabasket president Gandini says suspension of Serie A will cost €40 million

Serie A will lose at least €40 million for the early cancelation of the league

Legabasket president Umberto Gandini said that suspension and cancelation of Serie A will cost €40 million in losses.

“The basketball Serie A has a turnover of around 110 million euros, and 50% of the turnover is generated by the 4 major clubs. The analysis of the losses that has been certified by Deloitte for the early closure of the league is around 40 million Euros, numbers that will increase if we are forced to re-start next season behind closed doors.
These numbers are not sustainable by the system and for this reason we are trying to face the situation in two phases to stabilize the situation of the clubs as much as possible: firstly by urging the Government to take appropriate measures to allow owners, investors and sponsors to continue to support sports including basketball. Then maintaining and strengthening relations with broadcasters to whom we will soon present a new call for the next period. There is uncertainty but we must be positive that sooner or later we will return to play. We are taking into account that some clubs will give up on participating in next season but at the same time we have clubs from the lower leagues that aspire to be part of Serie A. When we have more information we will decide what type of format and formula will have next season”.
