He also said he hadn’t spoken with Buss since the story ran and noted he hasn’t typically had frequent one-on-one phone relationships with team owners.
The report described tension tied to the Russell Westbrook trade fallout and even past private considerations about not extending or potentially trading James; Buss later issued a statement to The Athletic pushing back on the idea he wasn’t appreciated. With the Feb. 5 trade deadline two weeks away, James — who has a no-trade clause — was asked about his status and replied: “I’m good.”
