LeBron James saw his historic run of 1,297 straight double-digit games end with 8 points in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 123-120 win over the Toronto Raptors. Even on an off shooting night, he delivered the game-winning assist to Rui Hachimura for the buzzer-beating 3.
James admitted he knew the streak was in jeopardy but said he had “none” thoughts about it after the game: “We won.” Checking back in with six points on 3-of-15 shooting, he tied the score late, then passed out of the final possession instead of chasing double figures.
The streak, which began on Jan. 6, 2007, was the longest in NBA history, ahead of Michael Jordan (866), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (787) and Karl Malone (575), with Kevin Durant now the active leader at 267. Coach JJ Redick and teammate Jake LaRavia praised James’ unselfishness, invoking the “basketball gods” rewarding players who make the right play.
