Klay Thompson shared an emotional story about Giannis Antetokounmpo from 2022, when he was returning after more than two years away from the game. Now teammates in Miami, Thompson says that moment changed the way he viewed Giannis.
“That game made me feel like I could be a great player again,” Thompson told The Athletic, recalling his 38-point performance against Milwaukee in March 2022. “After the game, he walked from the opposing bench all the way down to our bench just to tell me how happy he was for me.”
Thompson became emotional as he continued: “I don’t want to get emotional, but that meant a lot to me. To be one of the 75 best players ever and not to be bitter in a moment where your team loses… that made me look at him in a different light. This guy is genuinely a great human being. So now, to be his teammate is just awesome.” The four-time NBA champion also spoke about Miami’s hunger to win: “I want to give it everything I got before I hang it up because Giannis and I know how hard it is to win. The hardest thing to do in this league is to win a ring.”
