Kenny Smith defended the NBA’s severe penalties against the Los Angeles Clippers for circumventing salary-cap rules. “You’re going to have to suffer consequences for that kind of behavior,” he told TMZ Sports.
“You’re not just toeing the line. You’re cheating at a high level and giving yourself an unfair advantage that nobody else has,” Smith added. Without severe consequences, he believes other franchises could attempt similar schemes.
The Clippers received a $30 million fine and lost five first-round picks, while Steve Ballmer was suspended for one season. Smith believes the loss of draft capital could damage the franchise for the next five to seven years.
