Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson, while visiting Italy, spoke to Tuttosport.
On Italy
“You are the home of beauty, the slow life, good taste, and passion—not just for sports. What do you need to excel? Investment in infrastructure, coaching staff, and clubs.”
“You have to spend, but in a strategic way. Only investment leads to steady growth.”
On his past
“Very well (in Italian, ed.). I struggle to speak your language well, but I could never forget my experience in your Serie A2 in 1997-98. The atmosphere, the colors, the wild fans, the fireworks during the derbies against Avellino and Pozzuoli. My family, who came to visit from the U.S., were impressed. You Italians experience sports with a visceral passion that leaves one in awe. In Naples, I also went to see some soccer matches at the stadium—moments that will stay with me forever. But you have other qualities as well.”
On Saliou Niang
“A strong, determined young man who works with great energy and is constantly growing, including in terms of leadership on the court. We selected him in last year’s draft, and I believe he will be part of our franchise’s future.”
