Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob has firmly dismissed recent speculation suggesting Stephen Curry could eventually leave the franchise.
Speaking on The TK Show with Tim Kawakami, Lacob addressed Curry’s contract situation as the four-time NBA champion becomes eligible for an extension on August 29.
“We’re not quite at that point yet, but we’re getting close. We’ll have that conversation and see what we do. But my guess is Steph… I wouldn’t worry about this too much. Steph loves it here, we love him here. I don’t want Steph to go anywhere, and I really can’t imagine a scenario where he does.”
When asked whether he could envision Curry ever asking out, Lacob gave an emphatic response.
“No, no, no. I don’t think that’s even a thing. This is just clickbait from people who do this kind of stuff. I’m very close with Steph, he lives right near me, he’s incredibly happy with the organization and with his life. I’ve never heard a word about that, and I think people are simply making things up.”
The speculation intensified after the Warriors’ unsuccessful pursuit of LeBron James earlier this offseason, leading some to question whether Golden State’s roster could influence Curry’s future.
However, both ESPN’s Shams Charania and Anthony Slater have reported mutual interest between Curry and the Warriors in reaching a contract extension.
General manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. echoed that belief earlier this week.
**”There are two things I’m confident about with Steph: he really wants to win, and he wants to finish his career as a Warrior. I don’t think that’s changing anytime soon.”
