The Minnesota Timberwolves had every reason to smile after Joan Beringer’s impressive debut at the Las Vegas Summer League, helping the team to a win over the New Orleans Pelicans.
The 18-year-old French center, selected 17th overall in the recent NBA Draft, posted an eye-catching stat line with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, and 7 blocks — tying the Summer League record for most blocks in a game.
“I don’t even have to explain, y’all see it,” said teammate Rob Dillingham. “He was like that since the first day. He plays hard, run the floor, take coaching well and he plays with everybody. … He’s gonna be special.”
While Summer League performances don’t always translate into regular-season success, Beringer’s quickness and athleticism make him a perfect fit for the modern NBA, where centers are often required to defend away from the basket.
Even more impressive is Beringer’s relatively short basketball journey — he only started playing seriously in 2021. Now, he’ll have the chance to learn the ropes alongside fellow Frenchman Rudy Gobert.
“I’m always thinking about how I can impact the game. My defense I think is the biggest thing,” Beringer said, visibly thrilled after learning he had already tied a Summer League record in his very first outing with Minnesota.
