Jason Collins, the first openly gay player in NBA history, has died at 47 after battling brain cancer. His family announced his death following his fight with Stage 4 glioblastoma.
Collins played 13 NBA seasons with the Nets, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Hawks, Celtics and Wizards. In 2013, he came out in a Sports Illustrated cover story, becoming the first openly gay athlete to play in one of North America’s four major professional sports leagues.
His family called him “an inspiration to all,” while Adam Silver said his impact went “far beyond basketball.” Collins leaves a legacy of courage, inclusion and humanity that reshaped the conversation around sports.
