Italy routed Great Britain 93-57 in Newcastle in the first of a two-game set: Nico Mannion scored 19 with 3 rebounds and 5 assists, Amedeo Della Valle added 11 (all in the second half), and Momo Diouf had 10 with 6 rebounds. It marked a second straight win in Group D for coach Luca Banchi after beating Lithuania, putting Italy back on track.
Italy raced away in the opening quarter with Mannion, Tonut, Niang, Veronesi and Diouf, as Veronesi scored his first points for the national team and hit a three for the early cushion. The Diouf-Niang connection stretched the gap, and Italy closed the first quarter up 32-14 on near-perfect shooting (8/9 on twos, 4/6 on threes), then reached halftime ahead 51-27 despite a brief British push.
After the break, Great Britain increased the pressure and briefly trimmed the deficit to 14, with Luigi Suigo and Della Valle both getting on the scoresheet during that phase. Italy answered with threes from Spissu and Della Valle to restore full control, and the fourth quarter quickly turned into garbage time, with the rematch set for Monday in Livorno.
