The walls are closing in on Dimitris Itoudis. Following a painful 93-82 defeat against Žalgiris Kaunas — Hapoel Tel Aviv’s fifth straight loss in the EuroLeague — the club’s management is now openly questioning the head coach’s future.
Despite Ofer Yannay’s recent public backing of Itoudis (comparing him to a club CEO), the board is now divided. Gili Raanan has notably increased his involvement, showing up to practice for the first time in months. It’s not just a boardroom issue. Reports suggest the majority of the roster feels Itoudis is failing to get the best out of the team, with some players explicitly telling management that a change is necessary. Assistant coach Stefanos Dedas is also on thin ice. His recent disciplinary issues and friction with both players and fans have made his position nearly untenable.
A high-stakes meeting is scheduled for Saturday evening. While Yannay previously claimed it was “easier to replace players than the coach,” the current crisis might force him to walk back those words.
